The Reclaim Project: Cleaning up Spokane for March Madness and Beyond

From the KXLY News story: The Reclaim Project partners with the Downtown Spokane Partnership to clean up the city for March Madness visitors while focusing on improving the lives of those experiencing homelessness and addiction in Spokane.

The Reclaim Project, in collaboration with the Downtown Spokane Partnership, is making significant efforts to clean up the city ahead of the March Madness tournament. From March 22 to March 24, members of the Reclaim Project will be out cleaning the streets from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, ensuring that Spokane is clean and presentable for incoming visitors.

However, the Reclaim Project’s mission goes beyond just tidying up the city for a single event. The organization is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of those living on the streets. Chris Bertram, a working manager with the Reclaim Project, emphasized the importance of making Spokane a safe place for everyone, including the most vulnerable members of the community.

For many members of the Reclaim Project, cleaning up the city is not just an act of volunteering, but a way to give back to the community that helped them overcome drug addiction and homelessness. Bertram explained that addiction can lead to a selfish mindset, but the process of putting one’s life back together often involves recognizing the importance of giving back to others.

The Reclaim Project’s efforts serve as a powerful reminder that addressing homelessness and addiction requires a multifaceted approach, one that includes both immediate actions like cleaning up the streets and long-term solutions that focus on rehabilitation and community support.
